In the third fall event to showcase the revamped Washington newsroom, the Medill School of Journalism’s Washington program hosted more than 80 online media professionals at the Online News Association’s November Meetup.

The featured speaker was David Wright, senior designer at National Public Radio. He shared the greatest hits from the Future of Web Design conference held in New York earlier this week. (You can view his ONA presentation, which condensed a full day of info into a networking event-friendly 25 minutes, here.) Interestingly enough, the main message for Web designers is very similar to what all new media professionals are hearing lately: Listen and experiment at all costs.

Some key takeaways:

  • Daniel Burka of Digg: Listen to your users — feedback can’t simply be grouped into “good” and “bad” categories.
  • Bill Buxton of Microsoft: The diversity of web browsers tomorrow will match the diversity of the ink browsers today.
  • Josh Davis of Joshua Davis Studios: If I’m not making mistakes than I’m not really learning anything.

New media professionals from NPR, Publish2 and the White House came out to the event to mingle and network. See who else was there at the Medill DC Flickr photostream.
